Each year the LSE Volunteer Centre recruits a number of students to act as ambassadors for volunteering on campus. This normally involves being on stalls on Houghton St, posting blog entries and generally telling other LSE students how fantastic volunteering is! We’d like to introduce you to this year’s ambassadors and let them tell you why they signed up.
Leyla Nor
Hi, I’m Leyla. I hope that being a student ambassador will give me the opportunity to help others who are in need and maybe even inspire more people to join in and lend a hand to make the burden of others lighter.
It also gives a sense of satisfaction that I am able to help. I always see it is important to give and share instead of just taking.
It also gives me the opportunity the meet like minded people and gives us the opportunity the discuss and plan events or activities to increase public awareness and help others.
Ellie White
Hi, my name is Ellie and I am studing MSc Empires. I’ve volunteered for the past few years in different capacities; I ran the RAG at Exeter University during my undergraduate studies which was one of the most valuable experiences I’ve ever had. I’ve always loved working with and teaching children, and recently got back from a month in Ghana, volunteering with KickStart Ghana. doing just that! I enjoy volunteering in general because I like gaining new skills and insights and I’ve always met absolutely fantastic people through it. I’m excited to be a Student Volunteering Ambassador, and hopefully encourage some other LSE students to start volunteering- I’d definitely recommend it!
Valerie Tang
I am Valerie and I am a BSc International Relations student from Hong Kong. I love volunteering because I get to contribute to organizations with causes which I identify with deeply. I am particularly interested in gender equality and LGBT rights. This is my second year working as the LSE Student Volunteering Ambassador, and I am looking forward to spreading volunteering opportunities to the LSE community.
Luo Yidan
I am Luo Yidan, currently study MSc in Risk and Stochastics. I want to make every effort to help others while experiencing the different lifestyle. I would like to share my experiences to more students in LSE and encourage them to start volunteering work.
Ashna Jassi
My name is Ashna and I am currently undertaking a Masters in Social and Cultural Psychology. I am originally from Canada (and brought along some maple syrup) and I completed my undergraduate studies at UBC Okanagan. During my undergraduate degree, I volunteered for organizations including the Canadian Red Cross, the Canadian Mental Health Association and UBC. My favourite parts about volunteering are learning about others and seeing the impact that small acts of aid can have. I am greatly excited to be studying and volunteering in London this year!
Kana Izumi
My name is Kana and I’m a second year Management student from Japan. My long-term volunteering commitment to care homes for the elderly and the disabled in Japan and China, and particularly teaching disadvantaged children in Cambodia were such eye-opening experiences that will last a lifetime. I have never seen children so happy and excited to go to school! Knowing that I made a positive impact on the others was an emotionally uplifting experience that can never be matched by fame or money. I am excited to be an ambassador, so as to build relationships with people who have similar interests and to inspire and expose other students to amazing volunteering opportunities!
Sugandha Sapra
Hi, I am Sugandha Sapra and I am studying MSc Economics at LSE. I have always enjoyed volunteering as I feel it is an effective outlet to reach out to people and give something back to the society. It is also a great way to meet new people from diverse backgrounds. I have volunteered with Teach for India (analogous to Teach First in the UK) where I taught in some of the most under-resourced and under-staffed schools in India and helped TFI in recruiting fresh graduates to teach in rural areas. I have also worked as a peer educator with the Youth Parliament Foundation, where I conducted workshops and group sessions on issues affecting the youth – especially sexuality, gender and gender roles, health and reproductive rights.
Make sure you check out the LSE Volunteer Centre for information on how you can help others during your time at LSE.
