Another Student Volunteering Week has come and gone. And what a brilliant one it was! Over eight days, we invited seven charities onto campus, raised almost £4,000, posted inspiring student-written blogs, held a photo competition in LSE halls with the LSE SU, and gained almost 100 signatories for an “education for all” petition. Here is our round-up a fantastic SVW:
On Monday, we welcomed the wonderful City Year UK onto campus to tell students about how they can work as tutors and role models in schools in deprived areas.
Tuesday saw IntoUniversity come onto campus and inspire students with information about its mentor programmes.
On Wednesday, the LSE Volunteer Centre tried to get as many signatures as possible for the #UpForSchool petition. We were delighted with the response from LSE students and staff and collected nearly 100 signatures. You can still sign online if you want to add your name.
We also found out about why LSE students volunteer during their time at the School through our halls competition, which was won by Carr-Saunders as it got the most “likes” on Facebook with these photos.
On Thursday, Privacy International was on-campus to give an insight into its work and share volunteering opportunities in its London head office.
Friday saw the turn of LSE-based organisation Lensational. They met with students to explain how photography can empower women all over the world. If you wish to donate a camera to help Lensational’s cause, you can drop it off in the LSE Careers Resource Area (Saw Swee Hock Student Centre, fifth floor).
We took the weekend off but were back with a “bang” on Monday, working with the LSE SU UN Society to host a talk about volunteering in the UK and China.
Finally, we finished SVW with the brilliant YTFN @ LSE event in collaboration with the LSE SU RAG and YTFN. During the evening the LSE community raised almost £4,000 and many volunteer pledges for three incredible charities – Lensational, The Tanzania Development Trust and RUSS.
In conclusion, we were very pleased with Student Volunteering Week 2015. Once again LSE students have shown themselves to be passionate, generous with their time and committed to helping the communities we live in. We can’t wait for next year!
