Blog by Viki Chinn – Careers Consultant for disabled students

There’s a buzz around campus in anticipation of students arriving – welcome to Michaelmas Term at LSE!

Whether you are a newcomer to LSE or a returning student this can be an exciting and busy time. At LSE Careers we have a full schedule of careers events waiting for you, from Careers Consultant led seminars and workshops to employer presentations and a whole range of information, recruitment and networking events.

All this activity can be both useful and enjoyable, however, it may also feel a little overwhelming trying to balance attending events and meeting application deadlines alongside focusing on academic study.

Finding inclusive employers

It’s a challenge for any LSE student to balance commitments and time effectively but it can be particularly demanding for students with additional needs arising from disabilities and health conditions. Add to this any concerns you may have about how you will be viewed by an employer if you disclose a disability/health condition or ask for adjustments to the recruitment process and Michaelmas Term may start to feel a little stressful.

Let me reassure you – there are a lot of good, inclusive employers out there who are more than happy to make adjustments, take into account mitigating circumstances, and will view you positively due to the extra skills you will have gained through living with and managing your condition. Achieving a place at LSE is no mean feat even without additional barriers so your success to date already tells them you are a highly credible candidate and they will want to offer you whatever you need to perform to the best of your potential.

How we support you

There are a whole range of ways in which we support disabled students with careers issues, decisions, queries and applications. We happily implement any adjustments needed to allow you to attend, and make the most of, any careers events we run. As dedicated Careers Consultant for disabled students I offer:

One-to-one appointments

We can discuss issues such as career paths and applications alongside disability issues including:

  • disclosure
  • reasonable adjustments
  • inclusive employers
  • handling difficult situations
  • managing job searching and studies with a health condition

To book an appointment or request some careers advice, please contact LSE Careers or email me, Viki Chinn, directly at careers.disability@lse.ac.uk

Tailored events

  • alumni information, networking and social sessions
  • introduction to Careers and Q&A session for disabled students
  • identifying inclusive employers
  • Access To Employment – an annual event bringing together LSE students with employers who are positive in inclusivity and diversity

Mentoring

LSE Careers is launching a mentoring scheme for disabled students which is running from October 2017 to July 2018. Our mentors are LSE alumni who have all gone through the processes of finding inclusive employers and success in the workplace.

The scheme will open with a launch event on Wednesday 11 October and will be followed by one-to-one meetings between mentor and mentee once every three weeks. To apply please complete a short form on LSE CareerHub. Applications close on Friday 29 September.

Online information

Visit our dedicated disability careers webpages for more on the above. You can also learn more about how other LSE students and alumni have found inclusive employers, as well as their experiences of recruitment processes, being in the workplace, opportunities such as Change100, and more. If you’d like to share your experience at any point, please let me know by emailing careers.disability@lse.ac.uk.
