In many parts of the world, lesbians and bisexual women, transgender people and gay and bisexual men face violence, abuse, rape and hate crimes. This May the LSE’s Spectrum and other organisations will be hosting events and activities to commemorate the International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia (IDAHO) which takes place every May 17th.
The IDAHO was launched in 2003 by Louis-Georges Tin, a French university lecturer, campaigner for Black and LGBT Rights and chief editor of the ‘Dictionary of Homophobia’. He proposed that this day be held on May 17th to commemorate the World Health Organisation’s decision on the same date in 1973 to remove homosexuality from the list of mental disorders.
Spectrum is the LGBT staff network at the LSE.
