  2. Something I have always considered important is the existence of a strong media in the UK. Unlike in other countries, here the BBC and others play a crucial role in helping academics translate their research (and that of others) into stories that may appeal to the broader public. This collaboration is critical. Academics could not do this on their own.
    Researchers hence can do a lot but if the government wants their work to have more impact then it also has to work with other institutions: parties, the media, the civil service, the private sector, think tanks, NGOs, etc. Without them, there is only so much that researchers can do.

  3. I was just at Birmingham Uni last week talking about many of these same issues, but primarily with reference to sociolinguistic research (and I referenced the LSE blog as well!). I think it’s great that universities are starting to recognise the importance of outreach and dissemination and I agree that social media gives us a brilliant platform to be able to do so.
