In May 2015 LSE Enterprise Germany developed and delivered a three-day programme focusing on global and local innovation insights at the Zukunftsorte presence at the Metropolitan Solutions exhibition. The programme included selected startup pitches as well as international speakers who gave ‘Global Urban Innovation Insights’ from research and governance perspectives.
The curated line-up contributed to the Zukunftsorte presence being one of the most visited exhibition stalls, while also offering the international audience a succinct overview of the innovation landscape in Berlin and beyond. Furthermore, the speakers showed how high-potential industry and research spots distributed all over the city of Berlin manage to leverage the creative tech ecosystem of the capital. LSE Enterprise Germany’s Christian Thiel and Pia Laube moderated the discussions and pitches throughout the three-day event.
Startups such as ubitricity, inno2grid, eMio and shoutrlabs presented their solutions and applications, and shared their experiences from the Berlin tech startup scene. Among the international experts were Timothy Papandreou from the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency, as well as Wolfgang Gruel from the MIT Media Lab Changing Places Group. Both were able to join the thought leadership platform ‘Urban Tech Leaders Dinner’, organised by LSE Enterprise in cooperation with Berlin TXL and Cisco. The dinner allowed for an in-depth conversation among leading urban tech innovators to discuss future scenarios of cities, infrastructure and mobility.
Metropolitan Solutions, an international trade fair and conference platform for dialogue on tomorrow’s smart, green cities, premiered from 20 to 22 May 2015 at the CityCube complex in Berlin. Comprising 27 high-calibre international conferences and workshops, plus a parallel exhibition, Metropolitan Solutions brought together stakeholders in tomorrow’s efficient, sustainable cities, including municipal leaders and representatives, decision-makers from municipal companies and associations, political institutions, NGOs, investors, global technology leaders, manufacturers, engineers, urban planners and developers, architects and representatives from science and research.
Zukunftsorte, or sites of the future, is a consortium of ten commercial and industrial sites in Berlin that have the potential to become highly developed locations over the next few years. These inner-city locations hold tremendous development potential, and stand out as a result of their strong and productive interlinking of science and business, where tech-savvy, science-oriented companies can turn innovative ideas into marketable products. They link the demands for sustainable urban development with modern working, living and recreational space.
Berlin TXL is one of the largest Zukunftsorte sites in Berlin that is currently in the planning stage for future development. It was central at the Metropolitan Solution exhibit as the future home of the ‘Urban Tech Republic’, a research and industrial park for urban technologies. The park will focus on research, development and production of environmentally responsible top-technologies for sustainable urban development. Companies, start-ups and scientific institutes will develop and produce urban technologies of the future.
In particular research institutes and institutes of higher education, science-based production companies and service providers in urban technologies will find an ideal location at Berlin TXL – which is why LSE Enterprise continues to consult and offer advisory services in order to support the overall development and coordination of the ‘Smart City’ concept and an international academic network. LSE Enterprise’s consultancy expertise, access to cutting-edge academic research and connections to the private, as well as the higher education, sectors, allow LSE Enterprise Germany to support the TXL evolution and to contribute to cultivating a world-leading space for ideas, innovation and entrepreneurship.
