On Wednesday 14 October 2015 the London School of Economics and Political Science, in partnership with Imperial College London, hosted the Forum on Medical Innovation at the Lincoln Centre in London.
The Forum was opened by Professor the Lord Darzi of Denham, who welcomed the attendees and noted the importance of the collaboration between Imperial College London and LSE. The first panel, on the Value Framework of Innovative Medical Technologies, began with a presentation by Professor Alistair McGuire of LSE Health on the regulatory aspect of the pharmaceutical sector.
This panel was chaired by Lord Darzi and consisted of Dr Mary Baker, MBE (the immediate past President of the European Brain Council), Professor Karl Claxton (Centre for Health Economics, University of York), Professor Geoff Dusheiko (Emeritus Professor of Medicine, Faculty of Medical Sciences, UCL), Ms Isabel de la Mata (Principal Adviser for Public Health, DG Sanco, European Commission), Dr John F Milligan (President and COO, Gilead Sciences) and Mark Pearson (Deputy Director, Directorate of Employment, Labour and Social Affairs, OECD). After the break Dr Panos Kanavos of LSE Health gave a presentation on “Options for the Sustainable Financing of Innovative Therapies”. The presentation focused on alternative funding methods for the health service sector, the implementation of conventional solutions and finally the applicability of these alternative funding methods, their modalities and the evidence surrounding their implementation. The panel, chaired by Professor George Gaskell (Special Advisor to the Director, LSE), consisted of Dr Patrick Jeurissen (Chief of the Strategy Group, Ministry of Health & Chief of the Fiscal Sustainability Program at Radboud University Medical Centre, Netherlands), Professor Carlos Gouveia Pinto (Lisbon School of Economics and Management), Dr Finn Børlum Kristensen (Chairman of the Executive Committee, European Network for HTA), Ms Dominique Polton (Senior Adviser to the Director General of CNAMTS, France) and Professor Adrian Towse (Director, Office of Health Economics).
