Ageing population

This is the question that Michael Murphy, Professor of Demography at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), will be asking at the second in this year’s series of LSE Masterclasses hosted at the Fundación Ramón Areces (FRA) in Madrid (23 – 25 May 2016).

Professor Murphy’s main areas of research include ageing and the demography of developed and transitional societies, and on the first day of the Demographics and an Ageing Population Masterclass he will be discussing global trends of an ageing population and how this impacts on health and social care needs.

Professor Murphy is joined by LSE colleagues Professor John Macnicol, Visiting Professor of Social Policy, and Professor Nicholas Barr, Professor of Public Economics.

With an increase in people reaching retirement, and living well into old age, what is the impact of an ageing population on the welfare state?

This is the important question Professor Macnicol will be asking on the second day of the Masterclass, in addition to the causes and consequences of mass retirement. Professor Macnicol has researched and published on many aspects of social policy and ageing during his career.

Professor Barr puts these ideas and questions into context on the last day of the Masterclass, presenting lessons to be learnt from economic theory and considering case studies from China, Chile and Sweden. Professor Barr will be using his expertise, gathered from his wide-ranging involvement in policy, to demonstrate policy directions to address the ageing population trend.

Applications are now open. To apply, please visit the Fundación Ramón Areces website. Successful candidates will be offered a place on merit by a selection committee consisting of representatives of LSE and the Fundación Ramón Areces.
