Third masterclass for Fundación Ramón Areces

As Britain headed to the polls last week to decide the future of their position in Europe, the topic of the third masterclass for Fundación Ramón Areces couldn’t have been timelier. The masterclass, held at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), finished yesterday after three days focusing on Europe’s politics, economics and foreign policy in the 21st century.

The first day of the masterclass saw Professor Ian Begg, a Professorial Research Fellow at the European Institute, LSE, assess the Brexit debate, a matter of days before Britain’s historic referendum. Professor Begg spoke on the debate of Brexit and the future of Europe. He also looked at EU economic governance and how this is reflected in growth, investment and jobs.

Sir Robert Cooper, who held key posts in the Foreign Office and in the European Union, and Visiting Fellow at LSE IDEAS, led the second day’s session on European diplomacy. Sir Robert Cooper looked at historic examples as well as addressing current challenges and future scenarios.

The masterclass drew to a close with the final day’s topic of trade and global economic relations. This was led by Julius Sen, academic director and senior programme advisor at LSE Enterprise.

This particular masterclass has received an extraordinary amount of interest and engagement, particularly because of the nature of the topic: The future of Europe. These three days provided the key to understanding the central issues of the Brexit and likely consequences. Also, with the elections in Spain approaching, we had a major debate amongst the group. The third masterclass in the series was timed to ensure relevant discussions within the context of these two debates.
