It was an early start in Madrid on 27 October for the 80 participants who attended the latest jointly-hosted event by LSE and the Spanish newspaper, Expansión. In honour of the upcoming US presidential elections, the event “The 58th US Presidential Election & the Status Quo of Transatlantic Relations” analysed the relationship between Europe and the United States.

José Manuel García-Margallo, Spain’s current Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, gave the opening speech.

Speakers included Carlos Westendorp, former Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs; Antonio Garrigues Walker, lawyer; and Michael Cox, LSE Professor of International Relations and Head of Programme for Transatlantic Relations.

Christian Thiel, LSE Enterprise Manager (pictured above and left), closed the event:

The first event here in Madrid, back in June 2016, focused on the Brexit referendum in the UK. This round-table discussion looked at the current state of the transatlantic relations in the run-up to the 58th US Presidential elections.

LSE alumni were invited to an exclusive breakfast after the event. This LSE Enterprise-sponsored event was a chance for the participants to meet & greet Professor Michael Cox.

It was a very insightful round-table with great speakers, an engaging audience, and the second time we joined forces with Expansión to inform the wider public in Spain about international social, political and economic developments.

We are very much looking forward to continuing this series of round-table events in Q1 2017, so keep your eyes open if you are based in Madrid or planning a visit to the Spanish capital. Christian Thiel
