LSE Enterprise is the commercial arm of the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). We provide a professional service for clients seeking consultancy services and custom education programmes based on the considerable expertise of LSE Academics. This encompasses project management, contract and financial negotiation, marketing and administrative support for individual LSE academics, departments, groups and centres. The academic experts are employed by LSE Enterprise on both PAYE and self-employed contracts, on a project by project basis.

Job Purpose

The role of the HR and Compliance Officer will encompass assisting the project teams with the process of contracting staff to work on both the delivery and administration of projects, engaged by both PAYE and self-employed contracts; maintaining a database of relevant details, using those details to assist the HR and Compliance Manager in the preparation of both monthly payroll submissions to LSE HR, and auto-enrolment pension details to the company’s pension provider. In addition the role will involve supporting the HR and Compliance Manager in the design and implementation of appropriate policies and procedures relating to the contracting, management and welfare of staff.

The role requires an extremely high level of accuracy and efficiency which means close attention to detail will be one of your key performance indicators. The ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines will also be vital to this role. To deliver services effectively and efficiently, a degree of flexibility is required and the post holder may be required to perform work not specifically referred to below.

Main responsibilities of the role:

  • Assisting the LSE project teams in the preparation of contracts, including preparing job descriptions and salary/holiday/ENI calculations for PAYE and self-employed academic employees working on the delivery and administration of LSE Enterprise’s projects;
  • Ensuring that all employees are issued and have returned appropriate contract documents by the start of their employment with LSE Enterprise, in accordance with all relevant service level agreements with LSE HR/Payroll, and all relevant UK legislation;
  • Ensuring that a fully validated proof of right to work in the UK is received from all employees no later than the first day of employment, in accordance with UK Visas and Immigration regulations, and to monitor on-going compliance with all relevant visa requirements;
  • Providing advice to and liaising with academic employees concerning contractual issues, payment queries and pension related questions;
  • Recording contracting and payment details and ensuring all academic employees are paid in accordance with their contract terms;
  • Liaising with LSE HR/Payroll to ensure that new payroll contracts and extensions are successfully received and entered onto the LSE payroll system;
  • Liaising with LSE project teams and LSE HR/Payroll to ensure that leavers are promptly identified and notified and review instances where continuous employment may apply;
  • Assisting the HR and Compliance Manager in the preparation and verification of the monthly academic payroll schedule for submission to LSE HR/Payroll, including the calculation of holiday pay due and the tracking of salary payments, as well as pension deductions made and returned to workers and paid to pension providers;
  • Reviewing the auto-enrolment status of academic employees on a monthly basis and recommend the appropriate action required;
  • Assisting the HR and Compliance Manager in the preparation of monthly schedules for submission to the company’s pension provider in support of the auto-enrolment process for academic employees and maintaining records to allow the proper tracking of new joiners, leavers and opt outs from the pension scheme;
  • Managing and updating the paper and electronic filing systems/HR records to meet administrative, project and legal requirements.

  • A minimum of 2 years’ relevant professional work experience
  • Excellent organisational and planning skills
  • Efficient under pressure with the ability to prioritise and multi-task effectively
  • A very high level of attention to detail and accuracy
  • Strong numeric and Excel (intermediate) skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with fluency in both spoken and written English
  • Ability to think logically, problem-solving and use initiative in order to deliver the role
  • Highly competent and skilled in the use of Information Technology, such as Outlook, Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat
  • Ability to deal with sensitive and confidential information
  • A team player with excellent interpersonal skills

  • Professional manner and appearance
