What’s your name and what are you studying?

My name is Stefan, and I’m studying for a Masters in Accounting and Finance. I did the Microsoft Office Specialist Certification in Excel.

Why did you do MOS?

In most jobs today, particularly in Finance and especially in the field that I want to be working in, you’re going to be using Excel and Powerpoint so I think if you can train yourself before you start your job, there are only going to be upsides. It’s good if you’ve gone out of your way to try and get something extra.

I used to think that I could sort of use Excel, but when I actually started to find out what you can really do, I found I wasn’t really using all of it, just skimming the surface.

How did you find it?

What I liked was that it was really flexible. I chose to do it pretty quickly, within 2 weeks but some people might want to extend it over a few months. You can arrange how many hours a week you want to do, whether that’s 1 or 6. If you’re already quite experienced, you can do it really quickly if you want.

The software we used to train is really similar as well so the exam wasn’t any more difficult.

Now that you’ve passed?

It feels good! It’s nice to know you’ve achieved a set target in a short time. With these things, you can take it further if you want with the Expert level or you can do more subjects. I think it’s great how you can build on it and still get a credible award so globally, any company will have an idea of what standard you’re at instead of you just saying ‘I’m good at Excel’. Doing MOS gives you a good foundation to build upon when you start your career.

So would you recommend MOS?

Yeah, definitely. It’s not particularly stressful, it’s quite nice and a big change from the usual courses because instead of covering a lot of theoretical things, you have some practical experience. I personally found it quite fun! But I think the interactive nature of it and the fact that you can go at your own pace makes it a lot more enjoyable than just reading a textbook. With a textbook, it’s not very helpful just reading about where to click instead of doing it, whereas in the interactive training sessions you learn ten times faster actually doing it yourself.
