I’ve already written about my doubts over Adam Curtis’ series of films called The Trap which ended last night. Now someone else has expressed deeper questions over his theory that somehow a small group of scientists and politicians during the Cold War created a machine philiosophy that has replaced real notions of freedom. In the end I think that Curtis is desperately trying to find a way of attacking capitalism and liberalism that doesn’t involve being either an anarachist or an old-fashioned socialist. But I really enjoyed the series and hope that he gets a chance to make a follow up programme which actually says what he thinks is a positive idea of freedom and politics for the future rather than conjuring pretencious conspiracy theories from the past.
