Dear saves NUJ

The decision by NUJ boss Jeremy Dear to squash the proposed call on National Union of Journalist members to boycott Israel has restored faith in the union but has cost me a few hundred quid. I was all set for a dramatic resignation that would have saved me a tidy sum in union dues. Well done to Rory Cellan-Jones among others for their sensible campaign to rid the union of this silly bit of political posturing. I was disappointed in Jeremy Dear’s reaction to the boycott call at a debate I hosted a few weeks ago, but I suppose this shows his political nous and his ability to sort things out when he wants to. Now he can get on with the NUJ’s real job of representing members and campaigning for freedom of expression. I look forward to his u-turn on Hugo Chavez
