Does Online Journalism Improve The Writing?

George Brock has written an interesting essay on reporting standards through the ages sparked by a review of Robert Fox’s Folio Society “Eyewitness To History”.

He ends by discussing whether bloggers and other online journalism is superior or not to mainstream traditional writing.

Here is what he concludes:

“But digital communications have not damaged language or its power. On the contrary, screens and keyboards have allowed words to be produced and consumed more widely and in greater quantities than ever before. Amateurs and professional witnesses to events may compete, but together they enrich the written record.”

That sounds to me like another senior editorial voice has fallen for the charms of Networked Journalism
