The furore around the phone-hacking scandal at the News of the World has raised wider issues such as regulation and standards of British newspaper journalism. So we held a debate about it.
“Phone-hacking: is it time to get tough on the press?”
Speakers were:
Chair: Charlie Beckett (Polis) David Aaronovitch (Times), Paul Staines (Guido Fawkes), Martin Moore (Media Standards Trust), Charlotte Harris (Mishcon)
The news interview that has clinched it for me, that it is time to get tough on the press, was one I heard with former NOTW journalist Paul McMullen on The World Today broadcast of 4:05hrs (3:05 GMT) Weds 6 July. Listening in the early hours to such a complete lack of morality or understanding of human dignity, coupled with appalling arrogance, gave me the creeps. Our journalists have to stop believing they are the only guardians of the truth; especially when they view truth in black and white terms and refuse to accept either complexity or political nuance. I’ve had enough! http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p002vsn9/episodes/player
