Still looking for a job?

A lot of the questions we get asked in Lent Term are around whether there is still time to apply for jobs and internships. In short the answer is yes!

Are there still vacancies in graduate schemes?

Some organisations still have vacancies to fill and operate rolling deadlines, so keep an eye on the websites of organisations you’re interested in and on jobs sites such as LSE CareerHub and TargetConnect. It’s also worth looking outside London to increase your chances of finding vacancies.

Where can I find graduate level jobs?

Most graduate level jobs are with smaller organisations. Often they don’t run graduate schemes and instead advertise throughout the year whenever they have a vacancy to fill. You’ll see plenty of these on CareerHub and other job sites and of course you can also use networking and speculative applications to maximise success.

What opportunities are there to get some work experience this summer?

There are many ways to get valuable experience this summer. You could look at volunteering for a not for profit organisation, arranging some work shadowing or doing an internship with a smaller organisation which may still be recruiting.

In some sectors, such as advertising, it’s common to make speculative applications and use networking to find positions. Make sure you’re clear how your sector works – each one has its own ways of recruiting.

I’ve been unsuccessful in the applications I made in Michaelmas Term, what should I do now?

As mentioned above there are still opportunities. If you haven’t spoken with a careers consultant yet, it might be worth booking an appointment to discuss your options and whether any changes could be made to your applications strategy. One of the things that we can also discuss with you is the idea of having back up plans in case your original plans don’t work out (which is not so unusual). This will increase the opportunities open to you and allow for a flexible approach.

I don’t have the time to make applications as I need to revise for my exams. What should I do?

On the whole we’d advise making your exams your priority. You only have one opportunity to take your exams, but you’ll have countless opportunities to apply for jobs once the exams are over (and indeed for the rest of your career!)
