`On Tuesday 30 April, the LSE Volunteer Centre and LSESU RAG Society celebrated the amazing student volunteers at LSE who give back their time to the community. The LSE Volunteer Awards was attended by over 60 fantastic students, staff and charity partners – all passionate about volunteering! Read on to find out about the speakers and winners, or follow our live tweets from the evening on Twitter by using #LSEVolunteerAwards.

David Coles, LSE Volunteer Centre Manager, opened the ceremony by warmly welcoming guests and emphasising how important it is to recognise those who give their time back to the community.

Our students make a difference in so many ways, often without recognition, and this evening is about celebrating their achievements whilst saying thank you for the ways they improve the communities that we all live and work in.” David Coles, LSE Volunteer Centre Manager

Alex Selway (LSE SU RAG President)

LSESU RAG President and LSE Volunteer of the Year 2018 winner, Alex Selway (BSc in International Relations and History 2019), spoke on behalf of the society outlining some of the incredible fundraising activities from the year. This year LSESU RAG Society raised over £100,000 for their charity partners: Single Homeless Project, Mind and Teach a Man to Fish. Alex went on to express the important way in which RAG helps create a sense of community at LSE.

David Coles then welcomed the guest speaker of the night, Laura Reynolds, Community Participation Manager at Coin Street Community Builders (LSE Voluntary Organisation of the Year award winners for 2018). Laura gave an inspiring speech about the importance of volunteering not only whilst being a student, but throughout life. She also gave a special thanks to the brilliant LSE students who came to volunteer at their annual seniors’ party: Young at Heart and all the other students that have made a huge impact throughout the ten years they have partnered with the LSE Volunteer Centre.

LSE Volunteer of the Year 2019

Annie Thomlinson (BA Social Anthropology 2020) won the LSE Volunteer of the Year Award! In her nominations she was praised for being “practical, hardworking and always smiling” and for always going “above and beyond to help those around her”.

Outstanding Contribution to the LSE Community

Regina Legarte (BA Social Anthropology 2019) won the award for Outstanding Contribution to the LSE Community for her amazing efforts as a Peer Supporter at LSE. As she thanked the Volunteer Centre for her award, she stressed the value of being part of the LSE community and how it has been integral to her student experience. Susie Ward (LSE Student Wellbeing) nominated Regina because she “exhibits by her actions her commitment to the reason why LSE was first set up “for the betterment of society” and it has been a privilege to work with her”.

One of the great things about volunteering at LSE is learning about all the different ways that people are doing good in their communities. It is such an honour to win the Award for Outstanding Contribution to the LSE Community because it is a community that I am proud to be a part of, a community that reminds me of the capacity that people have for compassion. Being an LSE Peer Supporter and volunteering for Body & Soul has helped me to understand the importance of little acts of love, to recognise the small ways that we help each other – for me, that’s what it means to contribute to your community.” – Regina Legarte, Winner of the Outstanding Contribution to the LSE Community 2019 award.

LSE Voluntary Organisation of the Year

ReachOut UK, a mentoring charity that works with disadvantaged children, won this years award which celebrates our charity partners that we work with. The charity had been nominated not only for the amazing impact it has within the communities it works in, but also for the guidance and support they provide for LSE student volunteers.

It’s an honour to be nominated and win LSE’s Voluntary Community Organisation of the Year. We are proud to be recognised for the contribution our organisation and LSE volunteers to the local community. It’s been a pleasure to work with LSE over the years, and their student mentors have made a brilliant contribution to the lives of the young people in London. Thank you to all at LSE!” Harriet Bradshaw-Smith, Volunteer Officer at ReachOut UK.
