Are you a ‘yummy mummy’ disdained by Cherie Blair? Did you know the number of disability hate crimes in the UK has reached a record high? What do you think about the labelling of gay people as gay? Read to find out more.

Cherie Blair, speaking at the Fortune magazine’s Most Powerful Women event, criticised women who want to marry rich and avoid careers. She accused Britain’s new generation of women of betraying feminist struggles. Blair said there was a growing band of so-called ‘yummy mummies’ who were happy to put their children first before a satisfying and rewarding career. Blair’s stance was criticised by mums who decide to stay at home to look after their children. It also raised the issue of the cost of childcare in Britain.

The number of disability hate crimes reported to police has reached a record high, sparking concerns that the Coalition’s ‘anti-scrounger’ rhetoric is fuelling hostility to the most vulnerable members of society. A total of 1,942 disability hate crimes were recorded by police forces in England, Wales and Northern Ireland last year. Last week was Learning Disability Week and the focus of the week this year was learning disability hate crime. To find out more, read our blog post on learning disabilities.

We also came across a good comment from Barbara Ellen of the Guardian on labelling of gay people. After it was revealed last week that the TV fitness trainer Angie Dowds, who died last year, had committed suicide, the media has tagged along the label ‘lesbian’ with this news. Angie’s case throws light on the failure of the health system to provide her proper treatment for her mental illness but more has been made of her sexuality, making it implicit in her battle with her mental health. As Barbara Ellen puts it, “Dowds was a lesbian, but her suicide was not lesbian.”
