Student Podcast: Witchhunting and the Early Modern State

Estimated reading time: 10 minutes

In this podcast, Efua Irabor explores the relationship between witch-hunting and state formation in early modern Europe, with a particular focus on Scotland between 1560 and 1630. She analyses this relationship using three themes: judicial and administrative systems, social and religious homogeneity, and the relationship between church and state. In all three areas there is evidence for a strong relationship between state formation and witch-hunting, one which historians had previously overlooked.
