In this week’s round-up of equality and diversity news, we have – Muslim women excelling at top-level sport, Carrie’s bipolar disorder in the TV series Homeland and proposals to legalise gay marriage.

With the Olympic fever drawing close, we have a great opportunity to explore equality and diversity issues in sport. Last week, the Muslim Women’s Sports Foundation (MWSF) celebrated Muslim women in sport in their inaugural awards in Wembley. The MWSF strongly believes that faith and sport for both genders are entirely compatible. Offering female only sports clubs or sessions has helped to provide opportunities where more Muslim women feel comfortable in enjoying sport. MWSF also allows mothers to bring their kids along to some training sessions, thereby providing a faith and gender-friendly service.

For those of you who have been religiously watching Homeland, here’s another reason to stick to it – the series is being praised for its non-stereotypical portrayal of bipolar disorder. There have been hints and clues dropped throughout that Carrie (a CIA agent) has a mood disorder. However, it was only in the second to last episode that this became pivotal to the storyline. A blogger writes for the Time to Change blog: “Carrie’s battle highlights the stigma that surrounds mental health and the very real frustration so many of us feel when health gets in the way of life, it’s not a choice but the way we are.”

Meanwhile, the defence secretary Philip Hammond has said that proposals to legalise gay marriage should be delayed to let the government focus on policies ‘that matter’. However, Lynne Featherstone, the Liberal Democrat Home Office minister who is overseeing the gay marriage consultation, said it was about “how, not whether” the measure was introduced. The prime minister has publicly offered his strong backing to the measure but it was not included in last week’s Queen’s speech. The government is consulting on the plans and people have until next month to submit their views.
