Highlights from last week’s equality and diversity news – Pistorius refuses to compare Olympics and Paralympics, what’s the importance of diversity in the media, Coucil of Europe’s report on multiple discrimination against Muslim women in Europe and planning a holiday with a family member with learning disability.

Only a few more days to go for the Paralympics and Oscar Pistorius, the first athlete to participate in both the Olympics and Paralympics, is all set to sprint. Pistorius is an amputee who runs on prosthetic blades and has been at the centre of the debate on whether his prosthetic blades give him an ‘unfair advantage’. Pistorius doesn’t want to be drawn on comparisons between the Olympics and Paralympics and argues that Paralympians should be treated like any other athlete: “To me, a race is a race. People will admire the athletes for what they achieve, not focusing on their disability.”

The Paralympics strongly espouse the value of diversity, something that other fields can learn from too. Yasir Mirza, Head of Diversity and Inclusion at the Guardian, discusses the importance of diversity in media making a case for providing a platform for a range of voices.

Meanwhile, the Council of Europe has published an interesting report on multiple discrimination against Muslim women in Europe. The report aims to ‘explore the issue of the emancipation of Muslim women and to highlight their efforts to achieve gender equality and equal opportunities in European societies.’

And finally, if you are still planning a family holiday for this summer, you might find this holiday advice for families of people with learning disabilities useful. From choosing a venue and changing routines to maintaining your support systems, this advice collated by Netbuddy comes from experiences of similar families.
