Equality and diversity news from last week: if you missed our event ‘Working with the past’, you can read its review on the Out of the box blog; Facebook appoints a woman on its board of directors in a move seen to be addressing the lack of diversity at senior levels; and how Andi Keeling, director of women’s markets at RBS, came out at work.

Last week, we celebrated Women’s History Month at our event ‘Working with the past’, a panel discussion on the use of archives in studying women’s history. The panellists brought varied perspectives to the discussion. Catherine McIntyre, archives assistant at LSE, has written an excellent summary and review of the event on the Out of the box blog – do check it out.

Speaking of Women’s History Month, Facebook has often been criticised for lack of gender diversity on its board. Until quite recently, Sheryl Sandberg (who has been controversial because of her views on how women can achieve success) was the only woman on Facebook’s board. However, last week, Facebook confirmed the appointment of Susan Desmond-Hellmann to its board of directors, probably as a move in the wake of criticism over its lack of diversity at the top level.

And finally, we came across an inspiring article on Andi Keeling, director of women’s markets at Royal Bank of Scotland. Andi started her career straight out of school and is gay. Though she wasn’t always open about her sexuality, Andi is now out and proud at work. She wasn’t sure about coming out in a very male dominated environment but took the leap when she switched jobs. She says, “Being able to bring my whole self to work allows me to support other people around me much more. My experience coming out within RBS has been a really positive one. I hope my being out is encouraging for other people.”
