These fantastic photos from the LSE Library Flickr site tell the story of men’s football at LSE from the 1930s to1980s. 

Students v Porters Football, 1936. There used to be a match every year between the porters and students for the “Blotto Cup” which was an old tea caddy. There was a dance in the evening following the football:

Here’s some more about the later careers of some of these LSE footballers:

S A Crabbe – Samuel Azu Crabbe: Ghanaian barrister, solicitor and jurist; fifth Chief Justice of Ghana since it became an independent nation.

G E Mills – Gladstone “Charlie” Everard Maxwell Mills, BSc Economics. Jamaican academic, sportsman and public servant; first chairman of Jamaica’s Electoral Advisory Committee; involved in the foundation of the West Indian Students’ Union in 1946.

G K Amachree – Godfrey Amachree. Nigeria’s Solicitor-General, UN Under-Secretary for Trusteeship Affairs / Trusteeship and Non-Self-Governing Territories, and first Nigerian head of their FA; prominent member of the West African Students’ Union, proponent of WASU’s resolution demanding self-government in Britain’s African colonies.

R A Njoku – Raymond Amanze Njoku: Nigerian politician and First Republic Minister for Transport; Njoku seconded the motion for Nigerian independence raised by Prime Minister Abubakar Tafawa on 1 October 1960.
