Student sporting events have a long tradition at LSE, with much of the activity taking place away from our central London campus, at the sports ground at Berrylands, acquired in 1921. But boating activities were downstream, on the western River Thames. Enjoy this selection of photographs of students rowing and boating with LSE through the early years of the School.

Here are two photographs of students enjoying the Marlow Regatta in 1923.

We have the names of this student rowing team, the LSE Rowing VIII, pictured here at Reading in 1923.

Official clubs for rowing and sculling begun in 1927/28. The Boat Club provided the School’s first inter-collegiate victory winning the University Winter Eights in 1925 and in 1928 they won the Allom Cup. The women’s sculling team won an intercollegiate cup in 1930.

This photograph of students rowing at Mortlake, on the Thames, in 1936 was donated to LSE Library by W A Weaver.

In our final photograph, the Women’s Boat Club (1951-53) were photographed at the University Club House in Chiswick in 1953.
