On the 25th October 2017, LSE London attended London Build, a construction expo at Olympia. The goal of the expo was to understand what the current challenges are for the construction sector as well as to grasp this sector’s relationship with the current housing policies.

The expo was divided into several summits, leaving the audience free to attend a wide range of discussions. We chose the Future London summit with a series of insightful talks such as: “Next steps for London’s construction industry”, “Master planning & regeneration” and “London’s Housing Experts Discuss the Latest Trends and Developments”.

One of the main themes addressed was the lack of understanding of what each stakeholder in the house building process is doing. Speakers stressed the fact that young people do not consider the construction sector as an attractive career option. Meanwhile, the planning system and the lack of political will were blamed for the shortfall in housing completions. One can wonder who would have been blamed if we were attending a planning expo?

You can download the show report here. Check out the London Build Expo website for a detailed list and summary of the summits.

We have explored this line of research in our previous project under the theme of Constructing Construction. Click here to see the relevant outputs regarding innovative construction methods.
