Keep fit and be social at the same time?!? In this economy? LSE student Christina writes about her experiences outside of the classroom – and specifically competing with the Ultimate Frisbee club.
Although LSE can be academically challenging at times, university life is not just about lectures, classes, and readings 24/7. There are countless opportunities to explore your interests, find new hobbies, and one of the key places to do that is through our very own sports clubs! Whether you’re an experienced athlete or completely new, university sports are the perfect way to keep fit, make great friends, and learn new skills!
If you’re looking for a beginner-friendly sport with insanely high skill potential, then look no further than ultimate frisbee! I currently compete with the Ultimate Frisbee club, and they are a blast to play with. If you, like many others, are unsure what ultimate frisbee even is, don’t worry! It’s a super fun non-contact, co-ed team sport involving a frisbee. I like to think of it as a combination of netball and rugby, with both indoor and outdoor variations. There is a lot of running involved but it’s very fun I promise!
Many of us discover ultimate frisbee in our university years, meaning loads of members will be incredibly new to the sport. Not to mention it’s a fully mixed-gender sport, making it even more welcoming and relaxed. This was great for me, as someone who was never that sporty in high school, to learn fundamentals at my own pace alongside many others in my position. It being so beginner-friendly also means that you will be able to compete in tournaments such as BUCS (British Universities and Colleges Sports), LUSL (London Universities Sports League), and regionals without having to be a pro at the sport! This enabled me to learn super quickly and it has been a blast being able to play sports even when I still struggle to throw straight discs!
That said, there are some really good players in the club, and it really shows just how far you can progress in ultimate frisbee if you set your mind to it. I would definitely recommend this club if you’re considering joining a new sport!
Alongside the weekly trainings and tournament matches, the Ultimate Frisbee (and many others like it) organises multiple social events throughout the academic year. This includes;
- Games nights,
- Potluck dinners,
- Paintball, and more!
Being a member of a sports club is a great way to make new friends at LSE while doing tonnes of fun stuff. Below are some photos from our games, and our potluck dinner. I highly recommend you try out a sports club at LSE and see what they have to offer, as they are fulfilling ways to spend your spare time in between studies.
