Areum Cho a PhD candidate in Marketing reflects on the The London Marketing PhD Research Day. It was a rewarding event that brought together doctoral researchers and faculty from five institutions to share research and receive feedback in a collaborative setting. Areum’s involvement in organising the event enhanced her appreciation for teamwork and facilitated valuable exchanges of ideas.

Participating in the recent London Marketing PhD Research Day was a truly enriching experience. The event, which brings together doctoral researchers and faculty members from five institutions—London School of Economics and Political Science, London Business School, Imperial College London, Bayes Business School, and King’s College London—offers a valuable platform for students to present their ongoing research and receive feedback from both peers and academics across schools.
The day fostered a lively and collaborative atmosphere, where we could exchange ideas, discuss early-stage projects, and reflect on the broader academic journey we’re all navigating. One of the most meaningful aspects of the event was seeing fellow students share their work in an open and supportive environment. These kinds of conversations—relaxed yet intellectually stimulating—are incredibly valuable, especially during the often-solitary process of doctoral research.
Engaging with other PhD students and faculty members from diverse backgrounds not only helped me view my work from new angles but also introduced me to methodologies and perspectives I hadn’t previously considered.
While I presented my research in the data-blitz session last year, this year I took part in organizing the event and coordinating its preparation. One unexpected benefit of being involved in the organization was the chance to collaborate with colleagues from other departments. Camilla, Alessia, and Lucy were instrumental in the early planning stages, and we maintained close communication throughout. We also drew on the experience of the OB and ERHR groups, who had successfully hosted the student conference last year, gaining valuable insights from their shared materials. The experience gave me a deeper appreciation for the care and teamwork required to make such events meaningful.
The Research Day reminded me of the importance of connection in academia.
Thanks to everyone’s efforts, including my peers in the Marketing group, the event ran smoothly from start to finish. All presentations began on time, and the lively discussions and networking continued into the evening reception. We were also fortunate to have Heather’s warm opening remarks and Professor Naufel’s insightful closing remarks, which bookended the day with encouragement and reflection. The high turnout throughout the day was a clear sign of how well the event was received.
It’s easy to become absorbed in our individual projects, but days like this allow us to pause, listen, and learn from one another. I left feeling re-energised, more confident in my research direction, and grateful to be part of such a supportive academic community. I’m already looking forward to next year’s Research Day.
