Days after Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi sacked his intelligence chief, he has now retired the head of armed forces and his chief of staff and rescinded an order that would have sustained the military’s legistlative power.
The reshuffle, MEC Director Fawaz Gerges told Al Jazeera, is the beginning a “ferocious battle for influence and authority between the presidency and military. And whoever wins this particular battle, this particular struggle, will basically determine the nature of the political transition in Egypt in the next few months.”
