ITV News makes the Grade

Last night’s RTS awards saw confirmation of the remarkable recovery of ITV News with four major awards. Matt Williams got best young journalist, and the programme got best Home story, Scoop of the Year for its expose of Charles Kennedy’s drink problem, and best of all, News Programme of the Year. No doubt new ITV boss Michael Grade will have enjoyed this early triumph but, of course, this is testament to the longterm work of ITN boss Mark Woods but especially ITV editor in chief David Mannion and ITV News editor Deborah Turness. It’s proof that popular TV news is by no means dead and that commerical TV can still produce journalism that is high quality and watchable.
