7/7: The London Bombings: Media and Miracles amidst the mayhem

It’s three years since I edited Channel 4 News on the day of the London Bombings. On that day I had just returned from editing a series of programmes with Jon Snow in Africa. The following morning I cycled from my home in London past the sites of the bombings to work in central London.

We’ll be discussing the coverage of the London bombings in the Polis Summer School which starts this week, but I still find it incredibly moving and disturbing. The media performed at its best, in contrast with some of our work during the so-called War On Terror.

Channel 4’s 7/7 series has started with an incredible programme called The Miracle of Carriage 346. It’s a wonderful piece of simple testimony television. Survivors talking in detail and with great reflection on the experience of that day and the way it has changed their lives.
