Ever since the Illinois senator rose to prominence my fellow West Ham fans have quietly rejoiced in his family allegience to the East End Academy of football.

Conservative blogger and co-sufferer Iain Dale tried today to calm down over-excited Hammers who now count the leader of the Free World amongst our number.

Iain points out that Obama has denied supporting West Ham in an interview with a men’s magazine. Now even if you trust GQ‘s journalism there is an obvious explanation for Obama’s reluctance to show his claret and blue colours.

Now he is President he obviously doesn’t want to offend those who follow less ‘interesting’ (i.e. reliable, competent, well-run, successful) clubs.

I look forward to seeing him in the Dr Martens’ Lower with an Alf Garnett scarf and a dodgy burger.
