Sick of spending your lunch break in the company of soggy supermarket sandwiches? Rather than dropping crumbs into your keyboard, take a proper break from studying, get outside and make the most of LSE’s enviable location.

Here a five ideas for maximising your lunch break just fifteen minutes from campus.

Eat

If deliberating over a Just Ham or Simply Cheese sandwich is as exciting as your lunch time usually gets, prepare to be overwhelmed by the eclectic range of street food on offer at Leather Lane market. From burritos to brownies, paella to pad thai, your tastebuds are in for a treat. Peruse a selection of classic market stalls selling bric-a-brac, discounted magazines and household goods whilst you devour your lunch selection. A mere fifteen minute walk from LSE and not a pre-packaged sandwich in sight.

Keep Fit

For the thrill seekers amongst you, tackling the Vertical Chill indoor ice wall delivers an unusual antidote to lunchtime lethargy just five minutes from campus. The ice wall is eight metres tall and with temperatures ranging from -8°C to -12°C, there’s literally no better way to chill out in central London.
Prices start at £50 for an hour long lesson but lucky LSE students can take advantage of half price sessions Tuesday-Thursday.

Theatre

Escape the library and enjoy one of the Lunchbox Theatre performances at the Bridewell Theatre. There’s an impressive array of 45 minute shows across a range of categories including comedy, ballet, murder mystery and musicals. You’re encouraged to bring a packed lunch with you so you can return to your afternoon classes feeling satisfied in both mind and body. The Theatre is located in the tranquil grounds of St. Bride’s church, fifteen minutes from the Old Building. Student tickets are usually around £6.

With such a fine concentration of academic institutions across the city, there are a plethora of lunchtime lectures addressing life, death and everything in between. LSE’s own lunchtime series has included discussions relating to the power of brands, the 2015 Myanmar elections and what can be done to tackle social inequality. The Courtauld Institute of Art at Somerset House offers fifteen minute talks focusing on specific works in the collection. The National Gallery also run short discussion groups enabling you find out more about the collection and the architecture of the building itself. Slightly further afield are the Lunch Hour Lectures at UCL, designed to summarise the research taking place at the institution in hour friendly slots.

Music Concerts

Without even leaving the comfort of the Old Building, the Lunchtime Concert Series offers students the chance to enjoy free music recitals from a distinguished selection of international musicians. For those unfamiliar with chamber music, the Shaw Library allows listeners to experience the piece in the setting the composer intended. Concert-going veterans should be sure to admire the striking Steinway piano.

The lunchtime concerts take place between 13.05-14.00pm in the Shaw Library, 6th Floor, Old Building during term time and are free to attend.
