Have you ever had those days where you’re tired of the city and want to explore a new place? I went through such a phase on the 4th of June. The place I chose to go? Cambridge!
I went online to check ticket prices. It was £28. However, if I were to control the urge to embark on an adventure for just a day, I realised that the train tickets drop down significantly. Being a frugal person, I decided to book my tickets to Cambridge on the 6th of June (the prices were only £12 in case you’re wondering). I spent the entire day at Cambridge and it was one of the best times I’ve ever had. Here are five must-dos when you’re in Cambridge:
- Visit a college
Most colleges charge entrance fees, however, if you go with a Cambridge student of alumni, you can enter free of charge to the colleges. I was grateful to be accompanied by my good friend who is an alum. The most popular colleges at Cambridge are Trinity, Kings’ and Queens’. That said, all colleges are equally unique and picturesque. I particularly enjoyed Downing College.
- Walk around the market
In the city centre, there is a thriving street food market with delicious dishes from all around the world. Make sure to try a dish or two. There are also other small pop-up stalls from things like flowers, crystals, etc.
- Take a walk by the Cam
Nothing gives you ‘quaint village’ vibes like taking a stroll along the winding river Cam. If the weather permits, you could even go punting! The most popular spot is by the Mathematical Bridge. There is even a popular story about how Sir Isaac Newton constructed the bridge without any nuts and bolts.
- Attend the service at Kings’ Chapel
Listening to the world-renowned Kings’ College Choir sing live was truly a blessing! Services run quite often and they are free of charge. Make sure to check the website regarding the timings, although it’s usually at 5.30pm.

Eat a Chelsea bun
The traditional Chelsea bun is a sugary dream for every sweet tooth out there. First created at the Bun House in Chelsea during the 18th century, the currant bun is a classic food item that one simply must try. I’d recommend Fitzbillies, a quaint little café that offers a selection of delicious dishes and baked goods, and it made me feel like I was in one of Enid Blyton’s chapters where she describes the Famous Five enjoying a legendary afternoon tea!
After a day filled with pretty streets, amazing food and a satisfyingly long walk, it was time to take the train back to busy London. But, if ever you’re in need of a break, I’d 100% recommend Cambridge!
