Don’t know what to do this weekend? Look no further! Whether you’re new to London or have been here for a while, you’ll likely visit East London at least once. From historical encounters to fun bars, cafes, and markets, here are some suggestions on how to spend a day or two exploring everything East London has to offer.

Visit some of London’s historical sites

Nestled among the tall modern office buildings of the Liverpool Street area is the impressive Bank England. If you’re into history like me, you’ll enjoy walking by the central bank of the UK. The building stands in contrast to the newer ones around it, momentarily transporting you back in time. Fun fact-most modern-day central banks are based on the model of the Bank of England.

And while you’re in the area, take a walk over to St. Paul’s Cathedral. To me, it looks a bit like a capital building, but that may be my American bias speaking. Still, without purchasing a ticket and fully entering into the Cathedral, you can appreciate the enormity and cultural significance of the building as you pass by.

Finally, you can’t miss Tower Bridge. The iconic photo op will make everyone jealous of your adventures in London.

Shoreditch & Brick Lane Areas

As London’s hippest neighbourhood, Shoreditch is buzzing with life and is great place for a night out. Strolling down Brick Lane you’ll find unique coffee shops, bars, and vintage stores. For my foodie friends, I’ve been told that the Beigel Bake is a mouth-watering must. Also, be sure not to miss the street art. Bonus points if you can spot the broccoli wall. Random, yes. Fun, definitely.

Markets Galore

Borough Market

You might know the saying, “don’t go to the supermarket hungry,” well I would advise that you do go hungry to London’s markets. Whether you’re looking to do a little food shopping or want a bite to eat, Borough Market offers a fun atmosphere with options everyone.

Mercato Metropolitano

A friend recently showed me Mercato Metropolitano and I highly recommend you add it to your market repertoire. A little less busy than Borough Market, there are plenty of spaces to sit both indoors and outdoors and there is a variety of food and drink vendors to choose from.

Spitalfields Market

Discover unique local vendors at this East London market. If you’re on the hunt for a Christmas or birthday gift, I’m pretty sure you’ll find something here.
