A Day in the Life of a First-Year Law Student

Estimated reading time: 10 minutes

For background: I’m a first year law student and this is a day in my life in Lent (second)term. This day, I had a mixture of classes and a lot of meetings to attend so it was quite a fun one! I also only had one class on this day which is definitely different to days where I have 2 to 3 classes.

1. Morning

After doing all the lovely morning bits, I got ready to start some work. Before we get there, I will say that I find it really useful to have some sort of morning routine. It doesn’t have to be a strict or perfectly timed one but having several things which you know help you set up the day in the best way possible is ideal. When I don’t have class pre-9/10am, I enjoy a longer morning routine and when I have an early class or commitment, it shortens considerably!

9am– Walk to campus with friends.

I, like many others, cannot resist taking pretty photos of the views on campus after a good study session.

10:20am– I had an interview for an opportunity I applied for.

11am– Quick appointment.

11:20am-12pm– I started some tort law reading notes.

12-1pm– Lunchtime! There are definitely many food options near campus-and cheap options too!- so be sure to explore and try out some of these.

2. Afternoon

1-2pm: Criminal law class. (We were looking at the offence of theft this day).

2:20-3pm: Spoke to some friends after class, looked at apartments…

3-5:15pm: Some more tort law reading.

3. Evening

5:15pm: Went back to my hall

6pm: Went to the gym with a friend.

7:30pm(ish): Went down to get dinner. I stay in catered halls at LSE which I find really helpful as dinner is provided and going down to dinner is also a good time to catch up with friends and actively do something other than work. This day, I got takeout as I had a zoom call with some friends.

9pm: The Apprentice time and then bed!

I hope this has been a useful post for anyone wondering what it’s like to study law day-to-day or anyone just interested in student life. This day, I did have quite a few things on in the morning but some days, I don’t have as many greetings and meetings (or interviews!) and the days most revolve around reading, classes, other work or some form of socialising.

If you have any questions about studying law or student life from this post, feel free to leave a comment!
