So, you’ve been hearing “Uggla Family Scholarship”, but might not know anything about it (besides that it’s probably the largest scholarship you’ve ever heard of)… Well, you’ve come to the correct place!

The Uggla Family Scholarship Programme (UFSP) is worth over £20,000 each year for UK students and international students  – and it is completely free! However, I would argue that it is worth far more than this. Aside from the financial benefits of the UFSP, as a scholar you will receive personal career guidance, guaranteed housing, mentorship with the Uggla Family, and an endless list of career opportunities.

As a current Uggla Family Scholar, I have direct experience of the programme’s benefits. It’s comforting to know that as a Uggla Family Scholar, you already have your own little community away from home. This consists of Ikenna (the Programme Manager), Grace (the Academic Mentor), the Uggla Family, and the cohort of scholars across the UK and Canada. For example, during my first year at LSE Bankside House, I was housed right next to most of the other Uggla Family scholars. It is almost as if you’ll have a group of guaranteed friends for the three years you’ll be here. It’s nice to know that if I need a tea bag, I can pop next door to ask another scholar. We are really tight knitted.

I recall how nervous I felt when I first met the Uggla family. Naturally, I wanted to make sure I impressed them and didn’t say the wrong thing. But there was nothing to be concerned about. I immediately felt at ease as we started conversing. The topics discussed ranged from the serious stuff, such as career advice, to our favourite Game of Thrones characters. Lance Uggla (the main man) is both a source of inspiration to me and a very welcoming figure. We are now all connected via WhatsApp group-chats. Even when I was stressed out with university exams, I have been able to reach out to Ikenna who has always made me feel at ease. The little things go a long way in making your LSE experience the best it can be.

Being an Uggla Family Scholar has also meant that my CV is now STACKED. Within the first few months of Michaelmas Term, Ikenna organised a workshop with Emily and Paul on the CIVICA Engage Track. I immediately applied to further my civic engagement, and I will now be travelling to Milan, Italy for a week in June – for free! Honestly, I would never have heard about this opportunity without the UFSP. Other travel opportunities include mentoring in Zambia over the summer. Another memorable opportunity that I gained due to being on the UFSP was a research internship with the Inclusion Initiative. This was amazing as I collaborated with master’s students, as a first-year undergraduate. Ikenna and Grace have been by my side through several work experience applications, such as to BCG, PwC, and the IEA.
