London itinerary for a visit from friends and family

Studying in London, I can almost guarantee you that your friends and family will want to visit you at some point. Here are some things to do if you are still looking for ideas of what is best to show them when they are here for a limited time. First of all, start with what they really want to do. Chances are, whoever is visiting you will already have a couple of things in mind they want to do in London. You can then plan around these things. I would also recommend for any visit to show them around campus, so they can see where you study and marvel at LSE’s beautiful buildings.

Free activities

A lot of fun things to do in London must be paid for. I would recommend setting aside some money for paid activities but there are so many free things to do around London. Also, since the city is already expensive in terms of accommodation, food and transport, free activities are a great way to budget.

Some of my favourite free activities include:

  • Sky Garden
  • The Garden at 120
  • Walking along the Thames path
  • Walking along Regent’s canal
  • Visiting museums and art galleries
  • Walking around parks; my personal favourites are Regent’s Park and Holland Park
  • Window shopping around Oxford Street and Carnaby Street
  • Visiting Buckingham Palace and watching the changing of guard

Another free activity that shouldn’t be missed is showing them around your neighbourhood, especially if you live centrally. This can be a fun way for your guests and yourself to explore things close to you and within walking distance. There are many more free activities, and the internet is also full of tips if you need more inspiration.

Outside of central London

If you have a bit more time and want to venture out of Zone 1, I recommend going to Greenwich. There is lots to see and apart from the food market, also a variety of nice restaurants and cafés as well as Greenwich Park which is a fantastic picnic spot with a view of London’s skyline. Besides, you can combine this trip with a ride on the Uber boat, which allows you to see more of the city from the river perspective.

Food and drinks

Take them to your favourite restaurants, even if it is nothing fancy. Your friends or family members will want to grasp how you spend your time in London, and what better way to show them than through food! Other than that, consider going to one of the many food markets or having afternoon tea or a roast dinner if you’re looking for a more “traditionally British” experience. Of course, a trip to your favourite pub should not be missed either.
