There are a ton of places outside of London but within the United Kingdom that should be on your bucket list. During my time at LSE, I’ve been lucky enough to visit three cities that were incredible breaks away from the capital. Whether you go for a day trip, a weekend, or a longer stay – these cities are worth exploring.
Cambridge
First up is Cambridge, located just a quick 1.5-hour train ride away from London. While it’s well-known for its prestigious university, Cambridge has so much more to offer. The city boasts some of the most beautiful green spaces in the UK, with the Cambridge University Botanic Garden being a must-see. Take a leisurely stroll through the garden while planning your day exploring the rest of the city. Marvel at the stunning architecture of King’s College Chapel, the Corpus Clock, and the Mathematics Bridge before enjoying a delicious lunch at a local pub. And of course, no visit to Cambridge is complete without going punting along the River Cam. The tour guides are incredibly knowledgeable and will take you on a ride through history as you journey along the river. It’s also one of the best ways to get a view of the different colleges and see sites you wouldn’t catch by just walking through the city.
Manchester
If you’re looking for a vibrant city with endless entertainment options, Manchester is a must-visit destination, whether it’s for a quick day-trip or a longer weekend stay. While the city is renowned for its football stadiums and museums, there’s so much more to experience here. Even if you’re not a football enthusiast, Manchester’s diverse dining scene will leave you spoilt for choice with numerous restaurants and markets to explore. For shopaholics, Manchester Piccadilly and the Trafford Centre are a dream come true. But what really sets Manchester apart is its pedestrian-friendly layout, which allows you to wander through the city’s charming neighbourhoods like Chinatown and the Gay Village at your own pace. Don’t leave without taking a leisurely stroll and soaking in the sights and sounds of Manchester.
Edinburgh
For a getaway that’s packed with cultural, historical and scenic treasures, a weekend in Edinburgh is an ideal choice. Despite being situated in Scotland, the city is easily accessible from London, with train rides and flights taking only a few hours. Edinburgh’s stunning architecture is a feast for the eyes, ranging from medieval styles to colourful buildings. The city’s lush green spaces like Princes Street Garden, Calton Hill, and Arthur’s Seat provide a tranquil escape from the bustling streets. Make sure to add Edinburgh Castle, the Royal Mile, and Victoria Street to your itinerary to discover the city’s rich history and vibrant culture. And no trip to Edinburgh is complete without tasting the famous scotch whiskey. You’ll find ample opportunities to indulge your taste buds, from sipping on a dram at a local pub to visiting iconic scotch stores or even partaking in the Scottish Whiskey Experience. I did the latter, and loved learning about the history behind Scottish whiskey, and getting to taste various flavours at my own pace.
Exploring destinations beyond London can be an exciting way to enhance your overall UK experience. Whether you prefer a quick day trip, a relaxing weekend getaway, or a longer stay, these cities offer something for everyone. So, don’t limit yourself to London, pack your bags and explore the beauty that the United Kingdom has to offer!
