London turns into a wonderland of festive charms and spirited celebrations during the holiday season. Embrace the magic by engaging in this organised bucket list of experiences that will ensure you have an enchanting time in the heart of the United Kingdom.
Exploring Winter Wonderland
I absolutely adore going to amusement parks so when I heard that Winter Wonderland sets up roller coasters every year in Hyde Park, I knew I had to go immediately! The rides in Winter Wonderland were similar to those you can find at carnivals in the United States. While on my way to Winter Wonderland, a local had recommended I try the German sausage, which may I say did not disappoint. I would definitely recommend purchasing tickets before arriving at Winter Wonderland to avoid waiting extra time in long lines.

Admiring Christmas Lights
I always looked forward to seeing the dazzling Christmas lights in the Smithsonian National Zoo yearly with my family. However, I found other opportunities to see lights in London! There are a variety of lights to choose from, ranging from the traditional and elegant angel lights at Regent Street to the whimsical lights in Covent Garden. My favourite lights to see in Covent Garden were the gigantic Christmas bells and ornaments strung from the ceiling at the market. At Oxford Street, there was the iconic and shimmering “sky full of stars” display that really stood out at night. On the other hand, the zoo in DC during the holiday season was more focused on lighting up assortments of animal-shaped displays after dark, all of which are environmentally friendly LED lights.

Embracing Festive Performances
In DC, the Nutcracker Ballet is featured in various theatres and performance venues in the city, such as the Kennedy Center. This is a classical holiday tradition in many countries, bringing Tchaikovsky’s music and stunning choreography to life for people of all ages. Similarly, the Nutcracker at the Royal Opera House also performs with Tchaikovsky’s enchanting score. The production in London contains a lavish set filled with world-class dancers, all of whom are dressed in luxurious costumes. In addition, St. Paul’s Cathedral in London also maintains its majestic presence throughout the holiday season, offering Christmas carol services and religious ceremonies. The regular services on Sunday are free, so that’s one way to avoid paying for a ticket. The top of the dome at St. Paul’s Cathedral is also a great way to get a view of the Christmas lights in the city.
Immersing in Traditional Christmas Markets
In DC, it is difficult to spot traditional Christmas markets, but I spot them around every corner in London. The Southbank Winter Market allows you to walk along the River Thames and explore markets selling festive gifts and festive foods. Some of the most popular food items at Christmas markets include mulled wine (spiced wine, served hot), roasted chestnuts, gingerbread, churros, crêpes, and hot chocolate. On the other hand, Greenwich Market provides a more artisanal atmosphere of handmade goods and mouth-watering pastries. This allows you to go Christmas shopping for unique gifts that you may not find anywhere else for loved ones back home. I always enjoy running into live performances while exploring London’s Christmas Markets that spread holiday cheer with their Christmas songs.
