It is no secret that moving to university is a big and rather daunting change. Whether a pupil is international or local, many challenges, new experiences and opportunities are on the horizon. This is why it is so vital to develop a sense of community with others going through the same experiences and to be involved with activities and events that help to bridge the life transition and build long-lasting relationships.
It is with these sentiments in mind that the Uggla Family Scholars Programme (which provides scholarships for up to 10 undergraduate students every year) hosts its social events and workshops for the students on the scheme, fostering meaningful friendships and building a sense of community. Furthermore, beyond personal growth, such activities offer students exposure to new perspectives, ideas, and opportunities, enriching their academic experience and preparing them for future professional environments.

The Uggla Family Scholars Programme supports and provides community for pupils who suffer financial hardship or are from underrepresented groups in Higher Education, looking to help new students at LSE to gain a global perspective, achieve academic excellence and develop civic leadership skills regardless of background or circumstance.
As part of the Programme, each week a tailored workshop is hosted, with experts in their respective fields giving students insights into a career in their industry, helping scholars to navigate their career related decisions throughout their university journey. LSE Careers also hosts events for scholars, providing advice on CVs and cover letters as well as interview practice to help for future employment.

Alongside these workshops, a variety of social events are hosted. For example, students this year attended a welcome breakfast with Lance Uggla, Head of the Uggla Foundation, where they gained insights into Lance’s work and what the Programme has to offer, whilst also having the opportunity to have professional headshots taken. Pupils were also invited for lunch and team building activities at the home of the Foundation’s Vice President, Will Meldrum, fostering deeper bonds and friendships between Scholars of all different years within their university programmes.
To round up this year’s first university term the Scholars went bowling and had dinner together, enjoying the relaxed atmosphere and food alongside Will Meldrum who also attended.
The social highlight for a few Scholars so far in the Programme was attending the red carpet and screening of the brand-new film ‘We Live in Time’. This opportunity was so kindly enabled through the scholarship and was great fun for those who attended.

These events, without doubt, enable the formation of a close-knit community of students, whom offer a reliable support network, a sense of belonging and many opportunities for students to have fun.
LSE’s Uggla Family Scholars Programme provides up to 10 scholarships for new undergraduate students every year worth over £22,000 per year, as well as mentorship, support and opportunities to help you achieve your aspirations.
