Chinese New Year, also known as Lunar New Year or Spring Festival, falls on the 29th of January this year, marking the arrival of the Year of the Snake. The Snake, the sixth animal in the 12-year zodiac cycle, symbolises wisdom, intuition, and transformation. This celebration, based on the Chinese Lunar Calendar, is a time to sweep away bad luck from the past year, usher in prosperity, and share gifts and meals with loved ones. London comes alive during this vibrant festival, offering countless ways to join in the festivities. Here are some ideas to celebrate Chinese New Year in London!

Chinese New Year parade in Chinatown

On Sunday 2nd February, Chinatown will host London’s biggest Chinese New Year Parade. Starting east of Trafalgar Square and winding its way to Chinatown, the parade features lively lion dances, music, and more. It typically begins at 10.15 am and culminates around midday on Shaftesbury Avenue. If you miss the parade, don’t worry! Throughout the day, Chinatown will buzz with themed activities, family-friendly games, dragon dance demonstrations, and a zodiac display, with festivities wrapping up by 5.30pm.

For those eager to get in the spirit earlier, performances and cultural stalls will pop up in Chinatown on Saturday 1st February, providing a perfect prelude to the main event. Be sure to visit the Chinatown website or Instagram for more details!

Camden Market Spring Festival

Head to Camden Market on Saturday 1st February (1-5pm) for their Spring Festival. The event promises live performances, shopping, and craft activities for the whole family. Dive into traditional delicacies like dumplings, fish, prawns, and chicken, all symbolic of prosperity and good fortune. It’s the perfect way to combine cultural appreciation with a lively shopping spree.

Must-try restaurant deals

No Chinese New Year celebration is complete without indulging in delicious food. In Chinatown, Golden Dragon is renowned for its dim sum, while Hotto Potto is offering an irresistible 50% discount on all food from the 9th to the 24th of January, between 12-4 pm on weekdays. Whether you’re craving hotpot or steamed buns, this deal is a must for anyone wanting a festive feast on a budget. Be sure to book in advance as these spots will fill up fast!

More festivities across London

Although Chinatown boasts the largest celebration, other areas are joining in the fun. Battersea Power Station and Greenwich Peninsula will host smaller yet equally spirited festivities over the weekend with traditional performances and food.  Check their local event pages for schedules, and enjoy a diverse take on the Lunar New Year traditions.

To fully embrace the spirit of the Lunar New Year, remember to dress in red. This traditional colour symbolises good fortune and helps ward off evil spirits. Whether you’re at the parade, exploring Camden Market, or dining with friends, a touch of red ensures you’ll step into the Year of the Snake with prosperity and positivity.
