If you’re applying for a master’s degree and wondering what it’s going to be like to make new friends at LSE, then this blog article is for you! After spending several months at LSE, I am now able to share some advice about making friends among your master’s cohort. Being an introvert who looks forward to making new friends can be stressful sometimes. I know that many students want to find their people at university, and I can promise you, it is not going to be particularly difficult at LSE! Here is some advice:
Attend events organised by your department
At the beginning of the academic year, each department organises different kinds of events to allow students to meet and get to know each other better. For example, my department, the European Institute, organised a pub night, dinners, and even guided walks across the city. This gave the students an opportunity to meet outside the classroom and do fun activities together. I think this is a good way to start meeting people in your master’s degree!
Organise a pub night
Going out to the pub with your classmates is another good way of making new friends! You can take the lead and invite them out for drinks. Probably many of them are already looking for some fun plans for the night! Also, your classmates probably have similar interests to you, so you are bound to have such interesting conversations! Taking a break from your studies and having fun together will make your relationships even stronger.
Study together in the library
It is common knowledge that LSE students spend a lot of time studying in the library. If you feel like you do not have much time for a social life, going to the library with your classmates can also help you to make new friends. Studying together also means having breaks together and after some time spending time in their company, you will know your classmates even better! In my experience, most students in my department study together in the 4th floor of the library. It does not matter what time we decide to arrive or to leave, we know that we are always going to find someone from our cohort studying there and I think that is beautiful!
