Memorable ways to experience London: Part I

During term time it is all too easy for us to be unable to find the time to explore all the different spots in London, despite the LSE campus being located right in the heart of the city. However, with the summer break here, there is no better opportunity to enjoy all that London has to offer — without the guilt of procrastination! While you have in all likelihood become somewhat familiar with London whilst travelling to and from LSE, in part one of this blog I will share four unique ways to experience the city that offer a slight twist on how you might have already done so.

Walking Tours

London is a very walkable city and there is no doubt that you’ve already experienced it by walking to and from university. While it might initially sound mundane, walking is one of the best ways to actually get familiar with the city and discover new spots hidden away from the more touristy centres. London is a city rich with history and culture to explore, and going on a walking tour is a perfect way to spend an afternoon experiencing London through a unique lens. These vary in length, difficulty and theme, so there is definitely a tour out there for everyone to enjoy!

Double Decker Buses

Travelling around the city, you’ve probably taken one of the quintessential, red London buses already. Yet, they are not only practical for getting around but also a convenient way of touring the city. Bus tours are a great way to sightsee a lot of famous landmarks in a short period of time, all while sitting down! You can pick a bus tour based on the route, the price and what’s included, such as food and drink or the opportunity to hop on and off as and when you’d like. And if you want to take charge of the route yourself, you can always create your own by hopping on and off ordinary London buses.

Santander Cycles

You’ve definitely seen these red cycles lined up along the streets and you might have even ridden one to travel short distances around the city.  Santander cycles can be hired — without prior booking needed — at any number of docking stations dotted around the city. Cycling is becoming increasingly popular among Londoners as a mode of transport, and it is a great way to move around the city fairly quickly whilst sightseeing along the way. And if you’re not confident riding on the roads, enjoy a leisurely cycle on a sunny afternoon in any of the vast parks that London has to offer.

Thames River Cruise

Given that the Thames runs through Central London, chances are you may have walked along the river a number of times — but have you ever travelled across it? The Thames is lined with notable landmarks along both sides and taking a boat across the river certainly offers a unique perspective of the city. Especially during a vibrant sunset and at night when the buildings are lit up on either side, the views from the water are truly a sight to behold. There are a range of river cruises offering different routes, prices and on-boat experiences, so you’re bound to find a journey that suits you.
