My favourite things to do in London: a personal pick

London is arguably one of the best places to live in the world in your 20s. The things it has to offer to young people are as the diverse as the city itself. From historical landmarks to trendy cafés and bars, there are endless opportunities to explore a wide range of attractions.

Here’s my pick of the best things in London in different categories. They might be very subjective, but they are all student budget friendly so they might provide a source of inspiration for you when you move to London.

Favourite restaurant: India Club

Located in the heart of London’s West End and just a 5-minute walk from the LSE campus, the India Club is a historic restaurant founded in 1946 by Indian nationalists who were seeking to create a space for intellectuals and activists to gather and discuss politics, culture, and social issues.

It’s not only this special history (and the unique atmosphere it creates) that appeals to me about this place – I am also a big fan of the delicious and affordable food it offers. Whether you are an amateur or a connoisseur of Indian kitchen, you will enjoy it too.

Favourite pub: the Prospect of Whitby

Claiming to be the oldest riverside tavern in London, the Prospect of Whitby pub offers you an enjoyable pub experience with a picturesque location on the banks of the River Thames, and an historic interior to make it unique and memorable. To put it simply, it’s a great spot to enjoy a pint while taking in the views of the Thames.

Favourite park: Kyoto Garden in the Holland Park

A trip to Japan in London? The Kyoto Garden makes it possible.

It was gifted in 1991 from the city of Kyoto and features traditional Japanese garden elements such as a pond, waterfalls, rock formations and Japanese trees and plants as well as a traditional teahouse and a stone lantern. It’s particularly marvellous in the spring when the cherries blossom.

Favourite landmark: the Houses of Parliament and Big Ben

Looking at the Houses of Parliament and Big Ben just make you feel like you’re actually in London. There’s no doubt why they are the most iconic landmarks in London and are visited by millions of people every year.

While I have never toured the Houses of Parliament inside (which you can do), I do love to marvel at their view from the Westminster Bridge.

Favourite museum: The National Gallery

A classic choice, for a reason.

Located in the heart of London, in the Trafalgar Square, The National Gallery is home to a vast collection of Western European art. My favourite paintings from the vast collection include the Ambassadors, the Toilet of Venus, and Botticelli’s pieces.

The visit to the gallery is free, and it’s very close to LSE.

Favourite concert venue: EartH (Evolutionary Arts Hackney)

“A multi-arts space for the 21st century”, EartH is a venue in Dalston that hosts a wide range of events, such as music concerts, comedy shows, theatre productions, and art exhibitions. The venue is unique thanks to its original Art Deco features – the ceiling is particularly marvellous – which adds to the cultural experience.

I had a chance to see the concert of a young English artist Låpsley here. Indeed, the venue is committed to being a space for both leading and rising talents. It’s also environmentally conscious and promoting gender equality.
