One of the many perks of joining the Department of Geography and Environment at LSE is the numerous opportunities to travel! Recently, the department has organised many field trips both nationally and internationally. These destinations included L’Aquila (Italy), Havana (Cuba), Portland (USA) and more!
Last year, as part of our first year of study, all students in the department had the opportunity to attend a three-day, two-night field trip to Juniper Hall, full expenses paid. Juniper Hall is located near Box Hill in Surrey. During the retreat, we indulged in various activities related to our undergraduate studies like human, environmental, and economic geography. Off the top of my head, some of my favourite activities were investigating what bugs in a river can tell us about the water quality as well as exploring the connectivity, culture, and commerce of Dorking. Once the night fell, we had enjoyable events like a geography quiz and a bonfire under the stars.
Of course, it was also a great opportunity to get to know your classmates better, especially since it happened in late October! During the trip, I had the opportunity to make new friends that I didn’t get the chance to speak to before and learn more about my existing friends.
As the trip occurred just before Reading Week, it was a great chance for us to relax away from the bustling city and experience life in close proximity to nature. It is definitely something to look forward to if you join the department!
