LSE students tend to be very busy and have full calendars with lots of exciting events. However, this also includes time dedicated to academic work. Here are some of the things you will likely get involved in on a weekly or bi-weekly basis.

  1. Lectures and seminars: It’s important to attend your lectures and seminars and these will be the main reasons you go to campus every week. Contact hours vary depending on your course, for me I have around 10 hours per week.
  2. Readings: University is the time in your life where you are expected to learn independently and organise your free time accordingly. A lot of this free time will be taken up completing essential and background readings pertinent to that week’s topic. These readings will be challenging and stretch you, but they also help hone valuable skills such as condensing a large volume of information in a succinct way.
  3. Societies and sports: LSE has a diverse and large range of societies and sports societies to get involved with. The commitment level per week is dependent on the society you join and in what capacity you join. For example, committee members are likely to have a bigger time commitment per week. With regards to sport, most teams have casual and competitive membership so the time commitment per week will depend on the type of membership. Joining societies is a great way to get involved in university life outside the academic realm and I would definitely recommend joining a society or sports team you are interested in.
  4. Socials: Socials are a great way to relax and also meet people. Most societies have regular socials, but they are also very easy to organise among friendship groups or class groups.
  5. Speaker events and career events: LSE has many exciting speaker and career events on every week organised by different departments or societies. They are extremely informative, interesting and are a good way to find out more about a particular topic or career path. These are completely optional to attend, so it is up to you to decide how many events to go attend.
