To quote the revered philosophical sage Mr Spock, ‘Logic is the beginning of wisdom, not the end of it’. Logic is one of the cornerstone disciplines of philosophy and describes the laws of rational thought. It encompasses everything from ‘critical thinking’ and fallacies to highly technical formal proofs. It is also an increasingly referenced subject in the so-called culture wars. We discuss logic and its colourful history, stretching from Aristotle, through medieval thought, and right up to its role in contemporary political discourse.
