Text: The Secret Artist – A Close Reading of Sigmund Freud (Quartet Books, 2000)
In recent years Freud has come under repeated attack as a bad scientist and a disreputable colleague. But Lesley Chamberlain argues that Freud’s critics have been aiming at the wrong targets: it would have been more accurate from the outset to see the value of his work as art rather than science. Lesley Chamberlain argues convincingly for Freud’s importance to humanity; her peacemaking study aims to defuse the Freud wars and enable us to return to his work with renewed enthusiasm.
