LSE Student Volunteering Week: Volunteering and Education

This week is LSE Student Volunteering Week. The overarching theme for the whole week is ‘inclusion’, with each day holding events centred around a sub-theme. Wednesday is being led by Maya Kaul (BSc Economics), who has chosen to focus her events around Education. In this blogpost, she will reflect on why she chose Education as the theme for Thursday!

I’m Maya, a student volunteering ambassador at LSE. One of the causes I am most passionate about is achieving equal access to education across the board, regardless of gender, ethnicity, financial background, or any other factors. Through my volunteering experience I have been able to engage with this cause and the charities which are working hard to realise this goal. One of these is Salusbury World, who offer support to refugee and migrant children in London through a number of services including mentoring to help them overcome any obstacles in their U.K. education.

During LSE’s Student Volunteering Week, we hope to use our resources to lend a hand to the students supported by Salusbury World. As university students, we have a lot of collective knowledge and advice to offer these students as they consider how to approach their futures, especially as their circumstances may make them and their families less familiar with the U.K. higher education system. We have therefore collected a number of questions from them and invite you to drop by the Alumni Centre on Thursday the 9th of March to write a letter in response to one of them, which they are sure to appreciate. You may even realise that this is a cause you would like to pursue further during university and beyond.

We hope to see you there!

If Maya has inspired you to volunteer, check out one of our other ongoing opportunities or book a one-to-one with David Coles, the Volunteer Centre Manager if you have more questions. And why not follow us on Twitter, and Instagram to stay up-to-date with our events and opportunities and read our blog for more volunteering tips and stories.
